Khador Deployment

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 1]

Each 'jack received one Focus, Kreoss kept the rest. The Knights and the Warjacks ran forward, while Kreoss and the Choir advanced. The Choir sang Passage on both 'jacks and Kreoss cast both Defender's Ward (on the Knights) and Lamentation.

[Khador Turn 1]

Sorscha kept all the Focus for herself. She cast Fog of War. The 'jacks slowly rumbled forward, while the Kovnik and the Winterguard ran through the boulders on the right khadoran flank. The Mortar shot at the Knights, but was out of range, the template deviated harmlessly.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 2]

On the second turn each 'jack again received one Focus, Kreoss kept the rest and upkept his spells. All models advanced, the Choir again singing the Hymn of Shielding.

mediaobject

[Khador Turn 2]

Sorscha allocated three Focus to the Destroyer, one to the Juggernaut and kept two for herself. She upkept Fog of War.

The Juggernaut ran up to the chapel, while the Winter Guard on the other flank split up in pairs to not be targeted by one shot from the Vanquisher. Josef gave his speach Courage of the Forefathers.

The mortar team fired at the foremost Knight Exemplar, but missed. The template then deviated to hit the Crusader, another Knight than the one targeted as well as one member of the choir. Both infantry models died in the blast.

mediaobject

[Khador Turn 2]

The Destroyer also opened up but missed as well. After his shot deviated, he also killed one Knight.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 3]

The Crusader received two Focus, three were allocated to the Vanquisher and Kreoss kept two; which he used to upkeep his spells.

The Choir advanced and sang the Hymn of Battle to strenghten the Crusader. The Reclaimer also advanced, and allocated another Focus on the Crusader, spending one of his Soul Tokens.

The Crusader then charged the Juggernaut and destroyed him.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 3]

The Vanquisher advanced into the field of boulders and shot the Winter Guards hiding there. The hit missed and deviated, but still hit one of its intended targets, which killed him, as I did not make the tough roll.

[Menoth Turn 3]

Overview of the Battlefield at the end of the Menites 3rd turn.

mediaobject

[Khador Turn 3]

Sorscha allocated three Focus to the Destroyer and upkept Fog of War. She moved forwad, cast Boundless charge on the Destroyer and feated.

The Destroyer then charged the now stationary Crusader. He caused quite some damage and amputatet the left arm with his axe's special ability.

The Winter Guards shot down one of the Knights and CRAed the Vanquisher for 5 points of damage. The mortar shot at Kreoss, but the round missed and deviated harmlessly. The Kovnik moved forward to also shoot down a Knight, but missed with his cannon. He again gave his speach Courage of the Forefathers.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 4]

The Vanquisher received 1 Focus while Kreoss kept the rest und upkept his spells. The Reclaimer supported his Warcasters Focus allocation by moving forward and spending three soul tokens to give the Crusader three Focus.

The choir again performed the Hymn of Battle on both 'jacks.

The Vanquisher shook the stationary effect and advanced to attack a Winter Guard in close combat.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 4]

He easily killed him, but thanks to the tough roll the Winter Guard kept his tail up. The Crusader also shook the stationary effect and pounded away at the Destroyer, but did not cripple any systems.

mediaobject

[Khador Turn 4]

The Destroyer received 3 Focus and Sorscha kept three for herself. Sorscha advanced so that she could target the forward Knight with Razorwind, but she missed.

The mortar crew than had their moment of glory, by landing a direct hit on the Reclaimer and killing him. Kreoss and the other Knight in the blast circle escaped unharmed.

mediaobject

[Khador Turn 4]

The Destroyer amputatet the movement system of the Crusader, but did not manage to finish him off. Kovnik Grigoroviv gave antother speach, this time a speach For the Motherland. He then proceeded to again miss a Knight with his Hand Cannon. The Winter Guard managed to CRA one Knight to death.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 5]

Kreoss kept all his Focus.

The last two surviving Knights Exemplar advanced and attacked the Winter Guard as well as the Destroyer. One Winter Guard was killed, while the ohter Knight hit the Destroyer with a damage roll of 5,6,6. That crippled both arms of the Khador heavy.

Then Kreoss went cheesy. He let one member of the Choir advance exactly his own charge range away in fromt of him. He then charged the poor singer, and killed him. But this move brought him into range to cast Immolation on Sorscha. His normal movement would not have been enough, running would not have allowed him to cast spells. It was perfectly within what the rules allow - but to kill one of his own only to get the enemy Warcaster into his spell reach... was that really necessary?

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 5]

Anyway, as he had kept all his Focus, he was able to hurl 3 Immolation spells on Sorscha and boost one roll. To make hitting her easier, he first popped his feat, knocking her down.

  • Immolation #1 hit for 4 points of damage

  • Immolation #2 hit for 6 points of damage

  • Immolation #3, for which Bernd kept the last Focus to boost the damage roll, missed with snake eyes! Muahahahahahaaaaa! Bernd was really pissed not to have used the damage boost on an ealier roll.

But as it was, Sorscha still lived with 6 points of damage left. She could have been toast now...

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 5]

Half-hearted, the Crusader attacked the KD Destroyer, but missed. The Vanquisher killed the Winter Guard engaging him.

mediaobject

[Khador Turn 5]

Sorscha kept all her Focus.

The trusty Kovnik adressed the mortar crew with his speach For the Motherland, and then again missed with his Hand Cannon, this time Kreoss had been his target. The encouraged mortar crew targeted Kreoss and directly hit him, causing 5 points of damage.

Sorscha spent one Focus to shake the KD on her, then charged Kreoss.

  • With her first attack she boosted the attack roll and hit, the damage roll was automatically boosted because of the charge attack: 6 points of damage.

  • She spent her third Focus for an additional attack. The attack roll was not boosted and missed. 3 Focus remaining.

  • She spent her fourth Focus for an additional attack. The attack roll was not boosted, hit and caused 4 points of damage with a boosted damage roll. 1 Focus remaining.

  • Sorscha spent her last Focus for an additional attack. She was not able to boost as she had spend all her Focus. This was the most tense roll of the game... she hit! And proceeded to cause 4 points of damage! That finished off Kreoss!

Debriefing

  • Protectorate of Menoth (Bernd)

This time I went to battle with Kreoss. While Matthias used his Reclaimer in a previous game to cut off charge lanes, I wanted to use him to fuel my Warjacks and, well, destroy my opponent with the pure power of steam and metal. To make my Jacks even better, I took the choir as well.

What I missed was an Arcnode. Maybe I should have left one of the Jacks at home to bring one along. Without the node, but with the Reclaimer, I nearly had too much Focus because Kreoss was nearly never in range to cast his offensive spells.

The game itself went quite good for me. I was able to smash his melee Jack, but lost some Exemplars on the way. But I was not able to bring the Winterguard under control. It was probably a mistake to send my Vanquisher closer to the Winterguard, because he got stuck on that flank in the end. My plan was to field the Vanquisher as anti infantry piece. But Matthias, in a cowardly but very effective way, spaced his Winterguard across the table and behind cover, so that my template weapon was very ineffective.

In my last turn I had one more Jack then Matthias, but nearly no infantry left on table and the Vanquisher was rather useless anyway. I might have been able to go for the attrition game, but when I saw the opening for an assassination attempt, I could not resist. Sadly, the dice were not on my side. And in Matthias turn, he was then able to finish Kreoss off.

Wow, that was an intense and close fight! All came down to an epic Warcaster “High Noon” showdown. That was an exciting and even cinematic ending, but with the wrong hero biting the dust. ;)

  • Khador (Matthias)

What a tense game! Bernd was so close to winning when he cast all the Immolation spells on Sorscha, had he just used the one Focus for a boosted damage roll on the first or second spell... But to get to the position where he could cast the spells... pathetic how he needed to rectify his bad manoeuvring ;-)

Basically, I was quite pleased with my play. The Winter Guard did a great job playing a game of cat-and-mouse on my right flank amidst the boulders with the Vanquisher. That 'jack was basically out of the game, killing two Winter Guards during the whole battle. Against my 'jacks or against Sorscha, the Vanquisher would certainly have hurt me more. And the Winter Guards casually shot down some Knights as well. I could not ask more of them.

The worst decision was to run the Juggernaut towards the chapel. Not only was he outside Sorscha's control range (which I had not spent a thought of), but he was also in LOS and in easy charge range of the Crusader. That was a misjudgement on my side, I thought he would be out of sight from the Crusader. How I moved him, he was an easy target for a Crusader with three Focus...

The mortar is a very nice weapon, too. With his range of 20" and his indirect fire rule, he was really able to threaten all of the Menite models nearly from turn one. He is just a bit inaccurate, but as the Menites advanced in a spread out cloud, he nearly automatically hit something, even when his hit roll failed. And the shot on the Reclaimer was just perfect!
